Blue-green algae

Vedclass · Answer

(B) Blue-green algae, also known as $Cyanobacteria$,are prokaryotic organisms that possess the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen. Species such as $Anabaena$ and $Nostoc$ contain specialized cells called $heterocysts$ which provide an anaerobic environment for the enzyme $nitrogenase$ to function. This process converts atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia, which is then utilized by plants, thereby enriching the soil and contributing to the nitrogen economy of the ecosystem.
