(D) An estuary is a semi-enclosed coastal body of water that has a free connection with the open sea. It is strongly affected by tidal action, and within it,seawater is mixed with freshwater from land drainage. Estuaries act as nutrient traps because they collect sediments and nutrients brought by rivers before they reach the open ocean. Therefore, they are transitional zones between freshwater and marine environments, such as river mouths, coastal bays, and tidal marshes.
