(N/A) Cells can be combined in three primary ways to achieve different voltage or current requirements:
$1$. Series Combination: Cells are connected end-to-end. The positive terminal of one cell is connected to the negative terminal of the next. The total electromotive force $(EMF)$ is the sum of individual EMFs $(E_{eq} = E_1 + E_2 + ... + E_n)$,and the total internal resistance is the sum of individual internal resistances $(r_{eq} = r_1 + r_2 + ... + r_n)$. This is used to increase the total voltage.
$2$. Parallel Combination: All positive terminals are connected together, and all negative terminals are connected together. The equivalent $EMF$ is given by $E_{eq} = \frac{\sum (E_i / r_i)}{\sum (1 / r_i)}$,and the equivalent internal resistance is $\frac{1}{r_{eq}} = \sum \frac{1}{r_i}$. This is used to increase the current capacity and reduce internal resistance.
$3$. Mixed Combination: $A$ combination where rows of cells in series are connected in parallel. This is used to obtain maximum power output in an external circuit.

Two batteries with different $e.m.f.$ are connected in parallel. Consider the following statements: $(i)$ The equivalent $e.m.f.$ is less than the individual $e.m.f.s$. $(ii)$ The equivalent internal resistance is less than the individual internal resistances.

An electric eel generates an electric current using biological cells called electroplaques. The eel has a total of $5000$ electroplaques arranged in $100$ rows. This arrangement is shown in the figure. Each electroplaque has an $emf$ of $0.15\ V$ and an internal resistance of $0.25\ \Omega$. The water surrounding the eel completes the circuit between its head and tail. If the resistance of the water is $500\ \Omega$,the electric current generated by the eel in the water is .......... $A$.

$A$ battery of emf $18 \, V$ and internal resistance $3 \, \Omega$ and another battery of emf $10 \, V$ and internal resistance $1 \, \Omega$ are connected in parallel as shown in the figure. The voltmeter reading is: (in $ \, V$)

For a cell with non-zero (finite) internal resistance, write the relation between the terminal voltage $(V)$ and the electromotive force $(E)$ of the cell.

$A$ resistance $R$ is connected to $n$ identical cells. If the current in the resistance is the same whether the cells are connected in series or in parallel, then the internal resistance $r$ of each cell is:
