(B) The Hofmann bromamide degradation reaction proceeds through the formation of an isocyanate intermediate. In this mechanism,the alkyl group attached to the carbonyl carbon migrates to the nitrogen atom. Crucially,this migration occurs with retention of configuration at the chiral center of the migrating alkyl group. Since the starting materials have the amide group and the alkyl substituent in a specific stereochemical orientation (cis/trans),the resulting amine will maintain the same relative stereochemistry because the bond between the chiral carbon and the carbonyl group is never broken during the migration step.
