(D) The correct option is $D$. Biodiversity hotspots are biogeographic regions characterized by high levels of biodiversity and significant threats of habitat destruction. The concept was introduced by $Dr. Norman Myers$ in $1988$. To qualify as a biodiversity hotspot, an area must meet two strict criteria: $1$. It must contain at least $1,500$ species of vascular plants as endemics (i.e., species found nowhere else on Earth). $2$. It must have lost at least $70\%$ of its primary native vegetation. Therefore, a large number of exotic (non-native) species is not a defining characteristic of a biodiversity hotspot; rather, the focus is on the high density of endemic species and the urgent need for conservation due to habitat loss.

Select the option from the following which is not a major characteristic feature of biodiversity hotspots.
