(C) Mycorrhiza is a symbiotic association between a fungus and the roots of higher plants. The fungal hyphae form a network around the root or penetrate the root cells. These hyphae increase the surface area for the absorption of water and minerals (especially phosphorus) from the soil, effectively acting as root hairs, especially in nutrient-poor or adverse soil conditions.
