(B) The tectorial membrane is a gelatinous structure located within the cochlea of the inner ear.It plays a critical role in the process of hearing by overlying the hair cells of the Organ of Corti.When sound waves cause vibrations in the basilar membrane,the hair cells are pushed against the tectorial membrane,causing the stereocilia to bend.This bending generates nerve impulses that are transmitted to the brain via the auditory nerve.Therefore,if the tectorial membrane is removed,the mechanical transduction of sound waves into nerve impulses cannot occur,leading to an impairment of the sense of hearing.
